The Cybersecurity Education Crisis: A Critical Skills Gap

The cybersecurity industry is nearing a breaking point. By 2024, an estimated 3.5 million jobs will go unfilled due to a severe shortage of qualified professionals. Yet, our educational system is falling short in preparing students for these roles. Only 1.2% of high school students have access to a cybersecurity pathway, and just 3.6% have access to even a single cybersecurity course (Cybersupply.org).

Higher education isn’t faring much better. A survey of 121 top-ranked universities revealed that U.S. computer science programs are woefully inadequate in providing sufficient cybersecurity training (University of San Diego & CloudPassage). This gap is leaving a massive void in the workforce, unable to meet the demand for skilled cybersecurity experts.

At Horizon Cyber Solutions, we are committed to changing this trajectory. Our Work-Based Learning (WBL) and advanced bootcamp programs are designed to do more than just fill positions. We develop the "unicorn" talent your Security Operations Team needs to thrive. By partnering with Horizon, you’re not just addressing the skills gap—you’re helping to create a future where cybersecurity expertise is abundant and accessible.

Together, we can transform this crisis into an opportunity to strengthen the industry's foundation.

Jeff Zhu • Lakota (East) Cyber Academy Alumni • MIT Class of 2028 • Intern @ Procter & Gamble

“By working an information security internship at P&G, I learned so much about how my classroom technical skills apply in the real world! I also learned about the daily workflow of a large corporate entity and how I would be able to contribute with my technical skills.”

Matthew Price • Lakota (East) Cyber Academy Alumni • University of Cincinnati Class of 2026 (B.S - Cyber, M.S - IT) • Intern @ Fifth Third Bank

"Work-based learning not only developed my technical skills, but more importantly my people skills. Effectively communicating technical concepts is hard to teach in the classroom and is best learned on the job. This has helped me develop into a more proficient cybersecurity professional."

Work Based Learning… it works.

Research conducted by Strada Education Network reveals that more than 75% of students who participated in paid internships reported increased confidence in their abilities and knowledge to succeed in the job market. Work-Based Learning (WBL) is not only an advantage for companies but also significantly benefits students. It has been demonstrated to be a more effective learning approach, better preparing students for their future careers.

"Work based learning opportunities allow our students to apply technical and interpersonal skills we have practiced in class in a real world setting, solidifying those concepts. Students are driven to learn more about the work they are doing, and in turn share explanations and experiences with their classmates, which enhances their learning as well."
